Verinag

80 kms from Srinagar, altitude 1876 metres above sea level. The famous springs of Verinag gardens built in 1620 A.D. by queen NurJahan. The spring here is reputed to be the chief source of the river Jhelum. Further to the east lie the remains of a pavilion and bathes built during the emperor ShahJahan period.

Verinage ,the source of Jhelum or Vitasta,is famous for its compious spring . Once lord Shiva prevailed upon his consort Parvati to appear in the form of a river, and thrust his trident into the earth . Immediately a stream gushed out in a span or ' Vitasta ', the name by which Jhelum was known in ancient times .

Verinage is also known as Neel Nag and was sacred to the Naga king of this name.Verinag is situated at a distance of approximately 80 km from Srinagar. Reached through the link road, it is located at a height of 1,876 m. It is believed that the Verinag spring in Kashmir is the chief source of the river Jhelum. There is an octagonal base at the spring, surrounded by a covered passage. The Mughal Emperor Jehangir started the construction work on both the base as well as the arcade. It was during the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan that the work got completed. There are remains of Mughal pavilion and baths in Verinag, down the stream to the east.

MARTAND TEMPLE

Martand temple : About 64 km. from Srinagar .Martand on plateau, was sacred to the Sun-god. The temple of Martand was built by king Lalitaditya Muktapida, a well known most ruins are acclaimed by archaeologists for their massiveness and elegance.The most memorable and beautiful work of King Lalitaditya is the construction of spacious Martand temple, which the emperor got built in honor of the Sun God or Bhaskar. Lalitaditya was a Kshatriya of Surya (Solar) dynasty. The style of the construction of the temple and the skill exhibited in its construction is rare in the history of the world. Though the cities, towns and the ruins belonging to the era of Lalitaditya are not to be found so easily, the remnants of the big Martand temple, which the emperor had built at the pilgrimage of the same name, is an example of unique building skill of ancient Hindus. They are praised for their design, beauty and art. 

Martand holds a very high place in the world's great architectural designs and is considered to be not only an example of the Kashmiri architectural skill but also has pride of having been set up at a prettier spot than those of Parthinan, Taj Mahal and St. Peters. A representative of all such great buildings and monuments or a combination and sum total of all the qualities, the ruins of the huge temple stand in a square field with snow-capped mountains as its backdrop. This temple has been built with strong and square limestones and exhibits the pillars of Greek pattern. Martand temple is said to be a mirror of the art and skill of Kashmiri Hindus. This way Lalitaditya should not be considered only a founder of a vast empire but also a founder of art and skill of Kashmiri Hindus for six centuries.

ZIARAT OF BABA RESHI

 Ziarat of Baba Reshi is a famous shrine of saint Baba payam-Din , situated near Alpather Lake , about 13 kilometres from Gulmarg . It is here that the Baba spent hisdays in prayer and meditation after the renunciation . The grave is covered witha chaddar of exquisite workmanship . The devotees come seeking a boon, and if their boon get ganted , the revisit the shrine to present their grateful offerings here, in the memory of the saint .Ziarat of Baba Reshi is a holy place located on the slopes below Gulmarg in Baramulla District of Jammu and Kashmir.

This is a shrine of Baba Reshi, who is a well-known Muslim saint and a courtier of the Kashmir King Zain-ul-Abidin. This tomb was built in memory of the saint who died at this place in the year 1480. Dating back to the Mughal period, this tomb is visited by thousands of devotees all through the year.
